What is Acoustic shock?
Acoustic shock occurs where an individual receives a short, high-pitch or high-intensity sound that is transmitted through a telephone or radio headset and results in permanent damage to the individual’s hearing, tinnitus or hyperacusis. Those working within call centres are most at risk of this type of injury although it is not uncommon in other working environments. The Health & Safety Executive advises that acoustic shock should not arise provide that good practice is followed to reduce noise related injury. All call handlers should have training to recognise incidents of acoustic shock and how to report them, if an employee in a call centre has not received this training then this can help strengthen the claim. If your employer has failed to prevent such an injury and you have been affected by acoustic shock you may be entitled to bring a claim for compensation.
