What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a soft tissue injury which occurs in the neck, usually after the head has been jolted forwards, backwards, or sideways, causing a sudden extension of the neck muscles. Whiplash is usually caused by road accidents, but can also be caused by a blow to the head, a fall, a collision or perhaps while playing sport.
What Causes Whiplash?
Whiplash is commonly caused by road traffic accidents, when one vehicle is struck from behind by another. Although the body is restrained by a seat belt during a crash, the head isn’t – the “whiplash” effect is the sudden and unexpected movement of the neck.
The symptoms of a whiplash injury can include:
• Neck pain
• Pain in the shoulders and arms
In severe cases they can include memory loss, problems concentrating, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and depression.
A whiplash injury can be diagnosed relatively easily – by a simple examination or x-ray by your GP. This can establish the extent of the damage, and if any vertebrae have been fractured. The GP’s medical records will also be used during your compensation claim as proof that you were diagnosed with the condition.
How much compensation will I get?
We understand that if you’ve sustained whiplash in an accident caused by someone else, you may want to find out how much compensation you would get should you make a claim.
The amount of compensation awarded in whiplash claims varies significantly, and depends on a number of factors including the severity of the injury, whether you’ve lost money as a result of the injury, and the impact it’s had on your life.
Our solicitors will give you an idea of how much compensation you may be awarded if your whiplash claim is successful, based on the specific details of your claim
